Road Accident Facts & Emergency Response
Fatalities: Around 180,000 people died in road accidents across India in 2024, showing a notable rise compared to earlier years.
Daily Impact: On average, India recorded 1,317 road accidents and 474 deaths per day in 2024, which breaks down to roughly 55 crashes and 20 fatalities every hour.
Youth at Risk: People aged 18 to 34 made up 66% of road accident fatalities, underscoring the high risk faced by the working-age population.
Two-Wheeler Riders: In Maharashtra in 2024, two-wheeler riders and pedestrians made up 70% of the fatalities on state and national highways. Alarmingly, 67% of two-wheeler deaths were linked to not wearing helmets. Regarding children’s safety, close to 10,000 school students lost their lives in road accidents, emphasizing the urgent need for improved safety measures around schools.
Accidents Near Schools: According to the 2024 e-DAR report, 4.6% of road accidents took place in school and college zones, highlighting the critical need for thorough road safety audits in these areas.
Emergency Response: Timely medical assistance is vital. A recent survey showed that ambulance response success on core highways has dropped to 72%, pointing to the urgent need for strengthening emergency services.
